Mapping the Digital Future at a Global CPG

Enterprise Architecture
The Situation & Challenge

The CIO and Chief Digital Officer of a global CPG company planned to embark on a 3-year digital transformation journey across all areas of the business: marketing, sales, supply chain, manufacturing, HR, and finance.

However, they first needed to define a next-gen enterprise architecture that can unify these disparate domains into a singular vision of their digital future. Then, the company needed to prioritize business capabilities based on business need and business benefit, and to translate those prioritized business capabilities into an actional technical architecture.

Our Solution

We set out to define an enterprise architecture that featured a prioritized list of business capabilities, and high-level estimates of the cost (time, money, and risk) to implement those business capabilities.

First, we designed an enterprise architecture across the company’s entire value chain. We had three core value streams: Plan, Make, and Activate. Then, we had three supporting value streams: Empower People, Ensure Processes, and Enable Technology.

From this enterprise architecture, we were able to prioritize the business capabilities that would benefit most from digital transformation, by furthering the company’s competitive advantage. From there, we developed 15 business cases costing $100M over the next 3 years that could unlock a potential $350M in value creation.
